Dry Needling can be an effective way of reaching those tight muscle trigger points that remedial massage and other techniques simply can’t hit.
But what exactly is it? Akin to acupuncture, Dry Needling involves the insertion of a sterile, single use needle directly into muscular trigger points. These needles are tiny – generally .30mm in diameter – or about 10% of the typical medical style needle. Unlike “wet needles” these are ultra-thin needles that do not contain any substance or medication.
Dry Needling can target deeper muscular trigger points which are otherwise difficult to treat with traditional massage or stretching. It stimulates a local muscle twitch response, which in turn increases the range of movement, improves circulation thereby alleviates pain and stiffness.
Dry Needling treatments can be appropriately modified for each person – meaning they can be almost painless for those having their first treatments. As a general rule, as we move closer to the centre of the muscular trigger point – and twitch zone – there can be more ache associated with treatment.
It is recommended that your Dry Needling treatment is performed by a Physiotherapist who can:
- Accurately identify muscular trigger points to ensure you receive a safe and effective treatment.
- Identify and treat the many areas that may be associated with your pain – for example, neck tightness is commonly associated with pectoral tightness which should also be treated.
- In the case of recurrent pain – identify the need for further referrals or imaging.
- Identify areas of muscular weakness which may be underlying areas of constant tightness.
